MPI's Hosted Buyer Programs Mean Serious Business !

Sparked by a savvy and precisely targeted use of buyer and supplier qualification software, plus MPI’s own considerable meeting industry acumen, the 2015 WEC Hosted Buyer program rolled on this year and got rave reviews from its participants.

“To me, MPI is the be-all and end-all of meetings industry expertise, and I think that is why, in my experience, MPI has the best hosted buyer program out there right now,” says Leticia Thorpe (MPI Northern California Chapter), senior manager of convention sales for San Francisco Travel, the official destination marketing organization (DMO) for San Francisco.

Thorpe, whose organization has been a regular user of the hosted buyer format at trade shows for the past six years, says the element she finds most appealing about the MPI hosted buyer program is the high level of the vetting and matching of the buyers and suppliers before the show begins.

MPI does a really, really good job of this,” she says. “They give you very, very focused and specific information, and have created the mechanism allowing you to do your own research as well, so you are extremely well matched to the buyers you will have appointments with at the show. And that is all-important, because you are only going to have eight to 12 minutes with each appointment, and each appointment is a key opportunity for suppliers to make sales and build relationships with buyers that may start with that short meeting and last for years.”

Thorpe says that “face time” can be hugely effective because it combines the human interaction of a one-on-one meeting with the fact that the buyers and suppliers know a lot about each other based on the information they receive in the lead-up to the buyer-supplier sessions at WEC each year.

“We are finding that with the hosted buyer program at WEC, we are achieving an incredible 70 percent return on investment from our participation,” Thorpe says. “As a DMO, we do not sell the product for the suppliers who are our stakeholders. But we connect our buyers at the hosted buyer sessions with those San Francisco Travel stakeholders, who go on to book business from what we do in those short appointments at MPI hosted buyer. Everybody in the loop benefits.”
