5 May 2015 MPI Webinars Providing Online Education
Whether you're studying towards your Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation or just want to keep up with the latest information, webinars are a great way to do so. The format gives you chance for interaction even though you might not be even on the same continent with the presenter. And if you happen to miss the actual webinar when it takes places, they are recorded and you can access them at any time you wish afterwards. CMP-IS webinars These webinars are specifically good for the CMP candidates. Each one hour webinar is focusing on a specific area of the topics you need to cover for CMP. You can for example dive into what are ROI and ROO and how to measure them properly. One interesting topic is education itself. There's more and more free content available, but how do you determine what is good and what is not. Prepare for the trends that might affect your work as a meeting planner. The trends are also in focus on the Meetings Outlook webinar. This gives the participants to take a moment and look ahead. You can catch a glimpse of the thoughts behind these webinars from Jessie States, Manager of Professional Development at MPI, who presented similar topics at the EMEC 2015 in Krakow. Interested in Strategic Meetings Management? You have most likely heard the term SMM somewhere and might be already well acquainted with it. Or you might be just discovering the world of SMM and want to learn more. Either way, these SMM webinars help you to deepen your knowledge in the topic. You might want to establish an SMM program at your company, but don't know how. Or you already have something in place, but don't know fully how to best mature it. MPI's research can help and the webinar will provide three key steps to achieving effective partnership inside your organization and with your external partners. Remember to check out the coming webinars and if you miss any of them, check back later as they will be availabel for viewing afterwards. The Professional Development on Demand sessions can be found here. Webinars are complimentary for MPI members, but non-members can purchase access. Learn more about MPI benefits and join today. 14 Apr 2015 Seriously the Best Industry Awards Event I've ever attended! WOW, What a Party…
For the 7th consecutive year, the major awards show, ‘Danish MPI Awards’, celebrated the work of the individuals and companies, who have contributed to and impacted the Danish meetings industry over the last year. A total of 15 awards were presented by the MPI Denmark Chapter, last week in Copenhagen. As part of a site visit to prepare EMEC 16 that will take place in Copenhagen 7-9 February 2016, Pierre Fernandez, Federico Toja and Andrew Walker from MPI attended the Danish MPI Award Show. They were very impressed by the show and Andrew Walker said it was the best industry award he ever attended and shared the following top-ten reasons for inspiration: Here are the top 10 reasons: 1. Unique venue: film studio, essentially a big black box providing a blank canvas on which to create a magical setting with very high production values. 2. Creative setup: long tables (including a few that were bar height) that were divided into groups of six; we had table assignments but free to choose seat, with each table providing more intimacy than rounds of 8 or 10; greater opportunity to talk with everyone at your table. 3. Audience interaction: each place setting had a white and a black card, which were used throughout the evening to vote as a group on some fun questions to win a bottle of champagne. Every correct answer scored the table a golden balloon, and the ones with the most balloons went on to compete for the prize. The questions were silly, like could build the MPI logo quicker out of Lego, an event planner or a content facilitator, with hilarious videos revealing the answers. 4. Awards: spread out over the evenings with a few grouped together before the appetiser was served, then more before the main was served. The presentations were short and sweet, presenting the three nominees, the award sponsor announcing the winner, then one of the co-hosts asking the winner to speak, with no one speaking longer than a minute. 5. Food & Beverage: chef from the catering company came on stage before each course to explain what was being served. The food was fantastic, including Peking duck for the main and dessert served in three separate glass jars. No local wine, however...it came from France !              6. Audience: nice balance between MPI members and non-members, they seemed to be engaged with what was happening on stage (in other words, not talking over the proceedings) and genuinely happy for the award winners. 7. Music: four young and very different acts were featured during the event, including between awards vs. leaving them all to the end. This did not stop people from getting up and dancing at their tables! 8. Surprise elements: at one point there was a massive rock, paper, scissors competition which generated a lot of excitement in the room. You started with the person next to you, and the winner went on to compete with someone else and the person that lost would follow you, cheering you on. And so on and so forth until there are only a few people left and masses of people supporting each one. The final competition was done on the stage. So much fun! 9. Dancing: not unlike other awards, but I really liked the mix of live band (the final of the four acts), followed by a DJ playing top 40 and dance floor classics. The open bar featured five different specialty cocktails, which contributed to the party atmosphere 10. Last but certainly not least, I should mention that all the presentations (except the singing) were in Danish! It certainly didn't hinder my enjoyment of the evening and perhaps knowing how award shows typically go it might have even contributed to it! Not being able to understand what was being said allowed me to focus on the feelings being expressed and the overall energy in the room, which was consistently high. Overall, a fantastic event staged by the Danish MPI member Eventforce. The following individuals and companies were honoured with awards by the members of MPI Denmark: • Best Campaign – Wonderful Copenhagen with the #BeeSustain campaign • Best Return on meeting Investment – Crone & Co. • Best Technical Solution – ConsensusOnline • Event Planner of the Year – Anette Houghs • Meeting Planner of the Year – Jette Borner • MPI Member of the year – Karin Krogh • Best Catering Experience – Madkastellet • Best Conference Partner – ConferenceCare • Best Content Facilitator – Karin Krogh • Best Event Agency – Eventforce • Best Event Venue – DR Koncerthuset • Best Innovator – Eventforce • Best Logistic Solution – ConferenceCare • Best Meeting Venue – Kurhotel Skodsborg • Outstanding Achievement -Ulrika Mårtensson, Wonderful Copenhagen Convention Bureau Written by Wonderful Copehagen...
7 Apr 2015 Finland's Evento Awards awarding the best of the best
Awarding the industry In order to get the recognition from outside of the industry, that meetings and events clearly should have, we as an industry need to first recognize and award that excellence ourselves. This was one of the messages that became very clear when talking with Laura Scwhartz, former event director at the White House during the Clinton administration. Laura is an author, TV commentator, professional speaker and emcee and was part of the panel of judges at the Evento Awards in Finland. The Evento Awards have been organized now twice by the Eventolehti Magazine. Last year they started off with a solid show where 10 categories were awarded with an award. These include the best BtoB and BtoC events, best venue, best host and many others. The new event kicked off with a remarkable amount of entries. Closer to 200 people came together to celebrate this new event. The second edition was of course bigger by all accounts. The event hosted over 400 participants this time around. An international panel from 6 different nationalities were judging the events and finalists and Laura Schwartz was part of the panel. She was delighted to see the level of expertise within the participating events. The Awards show itself was produced by one of the winners from previous year (and a MPI member) and got very good remarks from attendees, Laura included. She was especially taken with the use of light and video mapping, which transformed the venue completely from the industrial hall into a wonderful gala atmosphere. A great aspect of the entries, according to Laura, is also the fact that while submitting the event for evaluation, the organizers also need think what worked, what needed a bit more work and so on. So it's just a great way of evaluating their own work as well. See the interview of Laura below. Meeting MPI Finland During her stay in Finland, Laura also met with the members of the MPI Finland Chapter. This exclusive networking event gave her the chance to meet the local MPI community and for the members to get a piece of the knowledge of Laura. Being also an active member of MPI herself, Laura shared her views on what an international membership association and the tight-knit community can provide to a member. She reminded everyone that all the other members are just a phone call away and that in MPI you are not alone with your challenges. There are 18,500 members in the same spot with you, even if they wouldn't always be physically in the same space. As an advocate of the industry Laura has also appeared as a speaker in the MPI World Education Congress in Minneapolis last year. The experience for her as a speaker and attendee was wholesome and Laura is a strong believer of meeting face-to-face. Technology and social media are both aspects that can enhance and prolong the experience and the contact, but can't replace the power of meeting people in person. Call for speakers for EMEC 2016 open If you would like to be a speaker at an MPI Conference, your time is now. The call for proposals is now open for our European Meetings and Events Conference at MPIWeb.org. Submit your proposal and keep this vibrant industry community thriving when we all come together in Copenhagen. EMEC16 takes place from the 7-9 of February in Copenhagen, Denmark. 31 Mar 2015 Interview of Geert Behets, Director Global Travel at UCB Pharma Belgium
We asked Geert Behets Director Global Travel & Fleet Management from UBC Pharma and experienced Corporate Meeting Planner a few questions on the HMCC certificate by MPI presented for the first time in Europe at EMEC15 conference. Q: You attended for the first time EMEC 15 in Krakow, what is your overall opinion about the conference? Quite interesting – the networking was quite good and the workshops were qualitative. Q: What were your objectives coming to EMEC and did you reach them? Meeting new people, learn and follow HMCC – yes I reached these. Q: At EMEC 15 in Krakow, you attended the Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate course, what are the takeaways of this session? Knowing more on the background and how to keep informed on new developments since this is still a moving target. Q: Another key aspect is “Compliance”, how was it addressed in the HMCC session? I felt sometimes that there was too much emphasis on “something we have to do” rather than “something we want to do” for the patients and the reputation of pharmaceutical companies. Some of the attendees were definitely attending in an effort to find ways around it. Q: More specific, in your opinion how has the procurement of meetings & events changed in the last years? Transparency has become bigger; not only for compliance but also  in how companies approach the suppliers. The suppliers are not ready for this yet. Q: For corporate planners, doesn’t procurement restrict or limit the planner to be less creative in the meetings & events? Not if your procurement department is good. Q: In your opinion why should meeting professionals attend EMC 2016 in Copenhagen? I have not yet made up my mind. The full day event canvas that I attended was so good that it will be hard to top! Q: Do you have any additional comments? There should be more room to meet suppliers in a structured manner if you do not want to be a hosted buyer. Next HMCC certificate course by MPI will take place at IMEX Frankfurt on Monday 18th May! Schedule: 09:00-13:00 Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate (HMCC) - Speaker: Pat Schaumann, CMP, CSEP, DMCP, HMCC and Director HMCC Department at MPI Professional Development This Certificate program is a partnership between the Workforce Center at Saint Louis University (SLU) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI). The HMCC is a four-hour seminar that provides .4 CEUs or four clock hours toward your certification or recertification of your CMP. 16 Mar 2015 MPI NL Conference - “All Aboard" !
This year MPI Netherlands celebrates it’s 20th anniversary and we organize the 13th edition of the very successful MPI NL Conference. On March 30th, a very cool venue, a former depot for trains de Rijtuigenloods in Amersfoort is the décor of a one day inspiration event for everyone involved in the meeting & event industry. This year’s theme is “EvenemenS”, a combination of the Dutch words ‘event’ and ‘human’. This theme is inspired by the fact that, although digitalized, events will never loose the human aspect  and the power of meeting each other, live or online. The entire program is designed with the human aspect in mind. The plenary sessions will showcase the organization of an emotionally heavily loaded event such as the memorial service for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, the airplane that was downed in Ukraine, where almost 300 civilians lost their lives. Govert Schilling will be on stage to elaborate on the role and place of the human being. Schilling is an acclaimed and prize-winning freelance astronomy writer in the Netherlands. Kaouthar Darmoni (PhD) is Assistant Professor in Gender & Media, department of ‘Media Studies’ at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). She is the founder and director of ‘Kaouthar Feminine Capital & Goddess Belly Dance’ in Amsterdam where she teaches women empowerment and Goddess Belly Dance with passion and dedication. Only part of the program is plenary and there is the possibility to put together your own program by attending different rounds of work shops. Everybody is different, so customization is the key word. Over the last few years the NL Conference went through several re-designs, resulting in a strong and innovative brand and an event no one wants to miss for the Dutch Meeting Industry. A big revolution took place in 2010 (short video in English): And again in 2014 (short video in Dutch): Join us to discover this unusual conference and meet the MPI Netherlands members and friends. 2 Mar 2015 Meetings Outlook 2015 Winter Edition : What are The Key Trends ?
The 2015 Meetings Outlook Winter Edition delves again into the latest trends in the industry. The study shows again improvement in budgets, but also increases in demand and costs. Overall the meeting industy is getting healthier, but the rising global seller’s market will continue to task meeting professionals suffering from shorter lead times and small budgets that aren’t keeping pace with rising costs. BUDGET SPEND: AN EMERGING SELLER'S MARKET IN THE U.S.? 53% of respondents anticipate a budget increase in the near future: 11% of respondents anticipate budgets to increase by 6% or more and 42% see them increasing between 1 and 5%. That will already mean more meeting and more attendees. This in return will fill meeting rooms, hotels and flights. Seems that building those strong business - and personal - relationships is more important than ever. This will of course be a challenge for the newcomers in the industry. FLEXIBILITY IS A KEY FACTOR WHEN BOOKING HOTELS AND VENUES  The increased demand will also make meeting planner's jobs more challenging in the sense that last minute changes and requests are harder to fulfill. If the planner has the possibility to give several options that would work for them, there's a lot bigger chance to secure a venue of their liking. As a result, some planners do see an increase in the lead times. But this isn't the case over the board and the European market is still strongly affected by the short lead times. In some European countries big events of 400-500 participants can still show up on venue's radars a month or two before the event is taking place.  Another challenge is the amount of RFPs the venues and hotels get and need to go through. Planners need to put more effort to their RFP in order to stand out. THE CORPORATE MEETINGS SEGMENT IS EXPECTED TO SEE THE MOST POSITIVE BUSINESS IN 2015 ! There is a clear improvement in the stability of business conditions and a vast majority of panelists see that there are increase of 1-5% in the business conditions. Still, negotiations are getting harder and harder in order to get to the bottom line but "the usual and persistent trend "Do more with less" is more and more difficult to apply because suppliers don't want to bargain their products" as explained by a planner in the survey. LIVE EVENTS vs VIRTUAL EVENTS ! With the increasing costs of live attendance, companies are looking into hybrid and virtual with renewed interest. Also attendees are really looking for innovation and a smart use of technology. The panelists felt that suppliers do need to lead when it comes to technology. There are very tech savvy planners, but the best suppliers know what to bring to the technology table before the planners even need to ask. MPI members can download the full research here.  // If you are not a member yet, you can download it directly by clicking here. You are the most welcome to join the panel of experts for the next Meetings Outlook survey by sending an email to: research@mpiweb.org The MPI in Europe Team...
